BADMINTON

AN OUTSTANDING PLAYER. TO VISIT MASTERTON. Considerable interest is being taken in Wairarapa Badminton circles in the arrival in Masterton tonight of Miss Mavis Kerr, of Dunedin, to put in a week’s training prior to leaving New Zealand with the Badminton Test team to tour Australia. Miss Kerr possesses a remarkable record of achievements. Otago champion singles title holder for the last five years, Miss Kerr made her debut into classical badminton as a schoolgirl. As a student at Columba College. Dunedin, Miss Kerr won her first national title —New Zealand women champion at 18 —in 1937. With Mrs Hawksworth (Masterton) she an nexed the women’s doubles title last year, losing her singles title to Miss Nancy Fleming, Wellington. With G. A. Pearce, Miss Kerr went through to the final of the combined national doubles, to go down to Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth. Competent critics expect that the inclusion of such a young but outstanding player as Miss Kerr will be more than justified.

Possessing a severe smash and a variety of beautiful strokes, the ex champion’s performance is worthy ol admiration. Miss Kerr will train with Mr and Mrs Phil Hawksworth at the Masterton Badminton Club on Thursday even ing. and a good attendance of enthus iasts to see the New Zealand representatives in action is anticipated.
