COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL NEW BRIDGE PROPOSALS. CENTENNIAL TREE PLANTING SCHEME. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday. Those present were the chairman. Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, and Councillors W. I. Armstrong. G. Moore. H. H. Mawley. J. jW. Colquhoun. P. R. Welch and J. Donald.

The chairman reported that negot iations with the settlers concerned, in regard to the land to be acquired for approaches to the proposed new Ruamahanga River Bridge at Wardells on the Masterton— Martinborough Main Highway had proved satisfactory, the settlers being in agreement with the County's proposals. A similar report was submitted by the County Clerk (Mr J. C. D. Mackley) in regard to the approaches to the bridge over the Wangaehu Stream on the Te Ore Ore Settlement Road.

The heavy traffic licence fees received and allocated during the past two years by the county as the Distributing Authority in the No 10 Heavy Traffic District for the licensing year ended May 31, 1939, totalled £8,651. The Masterton Borough Council advised that it was pleased to accept the council’s offer to share the cost of the local Centennial Memorial tree plant ing on a 50/50 basis after allowing for Government subsidy, and the work would be carried out by the borough's staff- in a manner as agreed upon at the conference.

The Wellington Provincial Court of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition advised that they had now reached a stage when a selection of photographs for exhibition in the Provincial Court must be made, and suggesting that each local authority should take active and immediate steps to ensure that their particular part of the dis trict was well advertised. If any expenses were involved in obtaining suitable negatives, the executive was prepared to consider any application for a grant to cover reasonable expenses. The matter was left in the clerk’s hands to make inquiries. The Wairarapa South County Council wrote thanking the council for its co-operation and advised that instructions had been given to proceed with an engineering survey for a new bridge site over the Taueru River at Te Whiti on - the Masterton— Martinborough Main Highway.

Mr E. W. Bunny, on behalf of the trustees Ox the estate of John Macßae wrote advising that the proposals made by the Council in respect of the new Taueru River bridge were acceptable to the trustees. Accounts amounting to £6.872 7s lid were passed.
