Messrs Brandy, M. White. B. Dalziell, Swanson. Sykes, Rowland (Palmerston North). Brooks (Auckland) are among guests at the Empire Hotel. A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night appointed the mayor, Mr J. W. Andrews, to fill the vacancy on the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board caused by the death of Mr C. E. Dowland. Guests at the Hotel Midland include Messrs Karey, Thompson. Whittaker, Kirby, M. Jenkins (Wellington), R. Gibbs (Featherston), T. Fox (Hastings), Renwick (Palmerston North), Carty (Nelson) and A. McDonald (“Summer Hill.”)

The No. 9 Bomber Squadron, under the command of Squadron-Leader Lennox Lamb, is representing the Royal Ail- Force at the International Air Display at Brussels from July 7 to 11. The squadron is the guest of the Belgian Government during its visit. Squadron-Leader Lamb is a son of Mr and Mrs W. G. Lamb, of Masterton.

The death occurred in Pahiatua on Saturday of Mr Joseph Edward Murphy, an old and well-known resident of the town. He was a returned soldier and vice-president and a member of the executive of the Pahiatua branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and was for more than 10 years a member of the Pahiatua Borough Council. He was also a very keen bowler. The death occurred recently of Mr W. H. Boyes, Kilbirnie, Wellington. Mr Boyes was for many years headmaster of the Takaka District High School. For a short period after leaving Takaka he was headmaster of the Girls’ Central School, Nelson, and at the time 01 his retirement was organising inspector of schools in the Nelson district. Since his retirement Mr Boyes had been living in Wellington, and is survived by his wife and two children, Miss Zoe Boyes and Mr L. T. Boyes, Lower Hutt. The death occurred in a private hospital in Palmerston North on Sunday, following a brief illness, of Mi- John Henry Shore Perrett, one of the bestknown residents of the Sandon district. The only child of the late Mr Robert Perrett, he was born in Lavington, Wiltshire, England, in 1868, and arrived in New Zealand with his parents in 1881, his father taking up land at Rongotea. After remaining with his father for a number of years, Mr Perrett purchased the Candown property, about a mile from Sanson, which he farmed successfully for 47 years till his death, Mr Michael Gaffney, who retired from the Police Force in February, 1936, after many years of service, died on Sunday in Miramar, Wellington, at the age of 67. Joining the Police Force in 1897 after having served for about two years in the Permanent Artillery, Mr Gaffney was first stationed in Auckland, but in 1904 he was transferred to Wellington and attached to the staff of the Commissioner’s office. In 1907 he was promoted to sergeant and in 1910 he was transferred to Dunedin,, going to Invercargill in the following year as district clerk. Later in the same year he returned to Wellington to a similar position, and in 1917 he was promoted to senior-sergeant. He retained the position as district clerk till 1930. when he was appointed to take charge of the stores department.
