Believed to have belonged to a volunteer rille company some time before the Boer War, 30 Enfield rilles of 1885 vintage were discovered by workmen engaged in the extension of the woolstore -premises of Williams and Kettle. Ltd., on West Quay. Port Ahuriri. The rifles, which are now in the hands of the Police Department, arc of a style already outdated at the time of tin? Boer War. and that those found in the loft of the store were intended for drill purposes only is indicated by the fact that the barrels are sawn partially through, making it impossible to lire the rilles. They are similar to those used for drilling by cadets before the Great War. A quantity of rotted and moth-eaten’ uniforms was also discovered.
