REID JUBILEE CUP CARTERTON v. GREYTOWN. A DRAWN GAME. Played in pouring rain, and on a field that was badly cut up as the result of a previous match, the game between Carterton and Greytown for the Reid Jubilee Cup, played on the Carterton Showgrounds on Saturday, resulted in a draw, each side scoring three points. Good back play was. of course, out of the question, and the game was for the most part a forward struggle, although at times both sets of backs endeavoured to throw the ball about. They did not,’ however, meet with much success.
Both sets of forwards played well, and it was exceedingly hard to mention any player as being better than his team mates. For Carterton the Matheson brothers were always in the picture, while for Greytown R. Brice and Humphries played solid Rugby. Carterton kicked off with the wind and the rain at their back, and for about ten minutes Greytown were penned in their own territory. Receiving the ball on the twenty-five yards line Thompson cut through the Greytown defence and carried play right to the goal line, where the ball was taken out of his arms by the Greytown forwards. Greytown ' came with a rush, and a high kick sent them into Carterton’s side of halfway for the first time. Both sides were doing their utmost to handle the greasy ball, but their efforts were not rewarded, and half time sounded without any score being recorded. With the driving rain no longer in their faces the Greytown side attacked right from the word “go” and were unfortunate in not scoring within two minutes of resuming l . A high kick by Fitzgerald sent his forwards streaking for the Greytown line, but from a scrum near the goal line the Carterton backs lost ground, Grey town gaining relief. Carterton continued to press but over eagerness lost them several good chances. They were not to be denied, however, and a melee on the Greytown line saw Walker force his way over for a try. The kick failed. With only a few minutes left the Greytown forwards launched a desperate attack on the Carterton line, and Brice taking the ball off a Carterton back, crossed in a handy position. The ball was, however, too heavy to put over the crossbar, and the game ended with the score:—Carterton 3; Greytown 3, ,Mr W. Spooner was the referee. Owing to the weather conditions the Masterton v Carterton Veterans match was postponed until a date to be decided later. WAIRARAPA UNION CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. SAjTURDAY’S RESULTS-. I JUNIOR.
