Rapid progress has been made by the Auckland Harbour Board with the improvement of the eastern breakwater in Mechanics Bay to give added protection to the air base area. In the last month the old stone bank has been trimmed to a length which is over 85 per cent complete. A similar stage has been reached with the concreting of the benches on each side, and the placement of the caissons has also advanced satisfactorily. It is considered that all the trimming and concreting work will be completed in a few weeks, the total now finished being over one-third of a mile. When this work is done, final touches will be added to make the breakwater into a marine promenade.
