THE RACING REVIEWED
HOW THE HORSES PERFORMED
Talavera Hurdles.
Novice Handicap.
Crofton Handicap.
The winner of the Trial Handicap on the second day, Hunting Royal, scored in the Crofton Handicap very impressively. Into the straight entrance Quilp and Rex Maitland were prominent and as they straightened out Screen Star was up in the van. At this stage Windsor Chief, Blonde Princess and Hunting Royal took an interest in matters, the latter being on the outside. In a hectic struggle Hunting Royal proved the best and won going away. Winter Hurdles. Despite his ten years Curie finished too solidly for his opponents in the Winter Hurdles, Ellanui being the only other runner to offer serious opposition. The winner was well back and did not make his presence felt until the half-mile had been reached. Ellanui was always in the picture although he chanced on one or two fences. Disturbed did not put in his claim until crossing the top for the last time. Erination tired over the final stretch into fourth place. Royal Dance also weakened. King Rey was going well when he came to grief at the hurdle in front of the stands. His jockey was not hurt. Winter Oats Handicap. Favourite for the Winter Oats Handicap Ned Cuttie proved himself worthy of the faith reposed in him by running clean away from the field over the final furlong. Once again those favourably placed in the early stages of mile events failed to run on, although Old Surrey, who was one of the last to move up at the turn, did well to secure third place. Lowenberg finished full of running after being well back into the straight. Yours Truly was beaten a long way from home. Tidewaiter and Jack Tar were never dangerous. Onslow Handicap. Majority, who was the public's first fancy in the Onslow Handicap, won with something in reserve. At the end of the first furlong Majority. Prince Acre and Royal Bachelor were prominent, this trio fighting out the places. Peacock put in a good late run to be fourth. Matoru again disappointed. Kia Ora Handicap. Wagner .and Centrepoise fought out a great finish in the Kia Ora Handicap, and the judge declared the result a dead heat. Both horsese were fairly well’placed throughout. Laughing Song making her second appearance, stuck on well to gain third money. At the false rail Erlick and Peach King were handy but failed to run on. El Meynell and Etzel failed to start well.
Concluding Day at Trentham RECORD TOTALISATOR TURNOVER FOR MEETING NEW PLYMOUTH STABLE SCORES FLAT DOUBLE (By “CARBINE.”) The final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting was concluded at Trentham on Saturday. The feature of the day’s racing was the success of R. Johnson’s stable at New Plymouth, Majority taking the Onslow Handicap and Ned Cuttie the Winter Oats Handicap. Curie outclassed the opposition in the Winter Hurdles, while Slayer was first past the post in the July Steeplechase.
Chat, who disappointed in the highweight company on the second day, returned to the hurdles and scored a decisive win in the Talavera Hurdles. Chat was one of the early leaders but lost her position going out of the straight and . it was not until the five-furlong post had been reached that she made a move. A furlong from home she had the Idad and stopped there. Vantoon and Tutor made a race of it and were just beaten. The latter was not in it until a couple of furlongs away when he came through fast to come within half a” head of the second horse. Jewelled Girdle, who came fourth after hitting the hurdle at the half mile. Ponty was disappointing.
First favourite Lady Tinkle carried her backers through in the Novice Handicap although Royal Show, whom the public had not followed up, ran her a close second. Royal Show finished better than anything else in the race. The early leaders were Beauly, Te Haka and Lord Midas, but all failed to run on. Indian Sun made a good run at the finish, while Laughing Song made a bold bid on the inside, but the heavy going told its tale. July Steeplechase. Gold Wren and All Irish were again to the fore in the July Steeplechase, but the latter lost his rider after completing a circuit. Gold Wren found the weight and the track conditions a little too solid. Of the seven runners only four finished. Manawatu took charge on the final round and was soon joined by Slayer. At the final fence, four of the five horses left in the race were together, but Slayer finished best to gain the decision. Gold Wren was well back,' and Lord Hereford fell at the last obstacle.
