PERSONAL

The Rt Hon M. J. Savage, Prime Minister, who has been suffering from influenza, has made a good recovery from his indisposition, and expects to resume his official duties this week. The Rev Laurence A. North and Mrs North were visitors to Masterton yesterday as the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Teeboon, Lansdowne. Mr North, who is secretary of the New Zealand Baptist Union, took the inaugural service at the meeting of Masterton Baptists in the Y.M.C.A. yesterday. Among the executive and other prominent members of the Wellington Caledonian Society who were present at the Saint Andrew Society gathering on Saturday evening were the Chief, Mr R. H. Nimmo, and Messrs GrayNasmith, Donald Stewart, Senr, and Clark. Both Mr Nimmo and Mr Clark were accompanied by their wives and daughters.

For private reasons, Mr R. C. Todhunter, Methven, has resigned from the Royal Commission which was recently appointed to investigate the present position of Ihe sheep-farming industry. A deputation of members of Parliament from South Island electorates, in which there are large areas of high country, has waited on the Acting-Minister of Lands, Mr Lee Martin, and suggested an appointment to fill Mr Todhunter’s place. A notable absentee from the Saint Andrew Society’s gathering on Saturday evening was Chief’s Piper Thos Pickett, who usually gives unstinting service in the provision of music for the dancing. He, unfortunately, was recently the victim of a serious accident, in which he suffered, among other in juries, a broken leg. At an appropriate moment during the gathering the Chief Mr 11. Mackenzie Douglas extended to Chief's Piper Pickett the sincere sympathy of the Society, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
