Describing present conditions in South China, Miss Annie James, a veteran missionary of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church in the Canton district, writes: “In this province there are said to be approximately 10.000.000 refugees, according to the census taken by llie Chinese Government. They tire in a sad plight, with no prospect of work, all their earthly belongings stolen or destroyed, and no homes to go to when days of peace do come. Near to where I am now living the people are selling their little girls for a small sum of money in order to keep the children from starving and also in order to get a little rice for themselves.” More than £1330 lias been contributed through the New Zealand Presbyterian Church to the Chinese relief fund for distribution by its missionaries to relieve the distress in the midst of which they are living.
