Guests at the Hotel Midland include Messrs J .Ronald, T. Kirk-Burnand, and J. Ellis (Wellington). Mr M. Bleakly, assistant-lecturer in zoology at Canterbury University College, has been granted bv the college council two years’ leave to enable him to visit England for research work. Mr Rupert Harvey arrived at Auckland by the Monowai from Vancouver to conduct examinations in elocution in New Zealand for Trinity College ol Music, London.
Dr. T. A. Watson, son of Mr and Mrs T. F. Watson, of Masterton, leaves Auckland next Tuesday by the Raranga lor England, where he will continue his studies. He is joining the Raranga as ship’s surgeon. Dr. James Moffatt, the distinguished translator of the Bible, who visited New Zealand some years ago, has accepted an invitation to be professor of the English Bible, in Drew University, Madison. New Jersey, for the academic year 1939-40. Mr R. W. Cumberworth, of the staff of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, has been appointed to the secondary staff of the correspondence school of the Education Department. Wellington. He has been on the staff of the boys’ high school for about 15 years.
The funeral of the late Mr William John Gray took place in Masterton yesterday, there being a representative attendance of mourners. The Rev John Davie conducted a service at the residence, Cole Street, and also officiated at the cemetery. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. Messrs F. Andrews, J. Elley. E. Elley and G. H. Gray, relatives of the late Mr Gray, acted as pall-bearers.
In recognition of_ their work for the Catholic Church over a period of more than 25 years the Pope has conferred the special decoration medal Benemerente on two Wanganui men, Messrs J. L. Carmody and Eugene Provost. The decorations will be presented by Archbishop O'Shea at the charity ball at Wanganui to night. Both are well known members of the St Vincent de Paul Society.
