SMOKE CONCERT

BASEBALL ASSOCIATION. INTEREST FOR COMING SEASON. Three purposes were served by the Wairarapa Baseball Association in holding a smoke concert in the Savage Club rooms on Saturday night —funds were raised, present members met socially, and interest was given in the game to a number of potential players for next season. During the evening, the Carl Larsen Challenge Cup was presented by Mr J. D. Baybutt, chairman of the executive, to Borthwick’s Bears, winners of the championship for 1938-39. The cup was received and the presentation acknowledged by Mr C. J. Curtin, captain of the winning team. A number of enjoyable items were given by the following: Mr F. Price, sketching; Mr O. Hemingson, songs and violin solos; Mr E. Button, recitation; Mr J. Claridge, songs; Mr J. Blake and Mr W. Hodgetts, piano accordeon solos; Mr C. Larsen, song. Mr E. F. Wilson was accompanist. The following toast list was honoured: The King; Wairarapa Baseball Association (Mr G. C. Gaze Mr J. Claridge); The Winning Team, Borthwicks Beai’s (Mr J. D. Baybutt Mr C. J. Curtin); Masterton Savage Club (Mr J. Bruce—Mr F. Price).
