GREYTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS REQUESTS FOR DONATIONS AGAIN REFUSED. / WATER PRESSURE & FIRE FIGHTING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. Those present were the Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, and Councillors A. B. Balfour, W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, A. Stewart. G. F. Eagar, H. Farley, F. Wood and H. J. Nightingale. "At the last meeting of the brigade the question of water supply and variation of pressure was discussed,” stated a letter from the Greytown Fire Brigade. "As you are no doubt aware the question of water supply came up in our annual report to the Underwriters’ Association. During the past three years the pressure has at times been down to 301 b and this is practically useless for fire fighting purposes. As the supply and pressure of water has a bearing on the insurance rates the brigade would be pleased to confer with you and try to find ways and means of overcoming the trouble.” The Mayor: “The season has been very dry and Greytown is not the only town that has suffered.” He moved that the matter be left to the Works Committee. His motion was carried. A further letter from the brigade stressed the necessity for a resident member of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board stationed in Greytown. “Our reasons for this are firstly the safety of our our firemen. During the last New Zealand Fire Brigades’ conference a paper was read on the dangers from pontact with live wires, etc, and special stress was made of the great risk from Neon signs if water was directed at them. For some years now it has been necessary to telephone to Carterton for a linesman in the event of a fire, and of course under these circumstances considerable time lapses before a man can arrive from Carterton. Also the brigade considers its duty is to get to the fire and then some time must pass before a man is available to send messages. At one time a resident linesman was in attendance but was taken away during the slump period. It is also felt that other factors and reasons make it desirable for the return of the man to Greytown which is the only town without a qualified man.” . On the recommendation of Councillor W. A. Tate it was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the next meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board. A letter was received from the Nat ional Peace Council of New Zealand stressing the importance of holding a world peace conference. The Mayor: “Our voice would not carry any weight. I move that the letter be received.” The motion was seconded and carried. The New Zealand Society for the Assistance of Crippled Children (Wairarapa branch) and the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, wrote asking for grants towards their funds. “We will be fairly heavily taxed with the centennial celebrations and we generally make a grant towards the Fire Brigade and Plunket Society,” said the Mayor..“ln view of these facts I suggest that no donations be made this year.” His suggestion was put as a motion and carried.
