WINTER WORK
LABOUR MINISTER VISITS HAWKE’S BAY. HEAVY SUBSIDY ON SCRUB CUTTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! NAPIER, This Day. . Paying a hurried visit to Hawke’s Bay for the purpose of providing work for men unemployed owing to seasonal works closing down, the Hon P. C. Webb (Minister of Labour), on being interviewed, stated that he had met local bodies and departmental officers and had endeavoured to arrange work as far as possible in and around the towns for the most necessitous cases. He hoped that the great bulk of the married men would be employed. A considerable number would be obliged to take on scrub contract work, which the Government was subsidising up to 75 per cent of the wages cost. The object of the Government in so liberally supporting this work was to enable many farmers to bring more land into production, and financial accommodation was being arranged through the State Advances Corporation. The Minister added that the Government was anxious to co-operate with local bodies in assisting orchardists. He hoped to provide an opportunity for everybody able to work to receive work.
