HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Horticultural society states inter alia:—The year has been very successful, the membership totalling 58, an increase of 26 members from the previous year. We were very reluctant to lose our secretary, Miss Esme Card, who resigned on account of ill-health. .A new secretary was appointed to fill the position. Owing to Mr Durrad s departure from Featherston the Rev J T. Holland was elected as a vicepresident. Mr Durrad’s departure also caused a vacancy as one of the Savings Bank Trustees. Miss Card was elected a trustee to act in conjunction with the secretary. The Show was held on November 24th, the date being a week later than arranged. _ It was a marvellous show considering the weather’s behaviour for a week beforehand, and the exhibitors were heartily congratulated at the displays they managed t» exhibit, there being record entries totalling 900. The decorative classes were splendid and the competition keen, as exhibitors from all parts of the Wairarapa entered. Several local members competed at the different, shows throughout the district, Miss Jean Tutbury again being the winner of the Greytown Challenge Rose Bowl. Another one of our exhibitors, Mrs C. J. Carlyon, again proved victorious in winning outright Mr Matthew’s cup. Mrs Scharnweber also won a cup outright donated by Mrs Viles. It was very pleasing to see‘ the primary school children enter into the spirit of the show, as they are the coming exhibitors. It would be splendid if more members could take an interest in their displays and encourage them still further. The decorative judge, Mrs Bennett, spoke very highly of her section. In fact, she considered it finer than Wellington. The following were the cup winners at the 1938 show: —Buchanan Rose bowl, Mrs Arch Clark; Sweet Pea Cup, Miss June Matthews; Professional Cut Flowers, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford; Cottage Garden Section, Mrs Scharnweber; decorative section, Miss Jean Tutbury; vegetables, Mr G. E. Yule; cooking, Mrs S. Renton: home-work, senior, Mrs Cameron, junior, Miss P. Hatton; junior decorative class, Miss J. Hatton; winner of decorative table by popular vote, Mrs C. Jay Carlyon (won outright). Mr Card, president of the Society, opened the show, wishing it every success. The Society wishes to thank Mrs Luke-Smith for taking charge of the arrangements for the morning tea, at which the exhibitors were entertained bufett fashion. Mesdames Leslie, Bloxam. Ritchie, S. Benton, Algar Williams, Miss Eva Card kindly donated special prizes in several sections. The thanks of the Society are also due to Mesdames Wood and Pink who gave their services as judges of fancy work and cooking free. Also we are indebted to Mr M. B. Tait who delivers and carries for us free of charge. Mr Mutter' and Mr P. Clark’s services must not be overlooked, and we arcgrateful to them also. Mr R. W. Matthews also deserve’s the Society’s thanks. Owing to a shortage of vases we again had to borrow from Greytown. who kindly lent us eight dozen vases. Mr Roberts has kindly offered to go through the vegetable catalogue. In Aid of Guild Funds. A gathering was held at the home o'. Mrs A. Parker, Pukio on Wednesday in aid of Kahutara and Pahaulea GuiL funds. During the afternoon some amusing competitions were held, Mr; Sadler winning two and Miss I. Frei! one. The serving of afternoon tea con eluded a happy gathering. Personal. Mr F. Wood and Mr J. Juno are visitors to the Palmerston show.
