CARTERTON S.M. COURT
MONTHLY SITTING CIVIL AND POLICE BUSINESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday and was presided over by the Magistrate, Mr H. P. Lawry. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given by default for plaintiff in the following cases:—Carterton District Co-Operative Society Ltd. v. E. Whiteman, claim £ll 9s 7d, court costs £1 10s, solicitor’s fee £1 Ils. Gordon Hughan Ltd. v. Happy Cowan, claim £2 0s 6d, court costs 17s, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d. Judgment summon® cases: —Watson and Co. v. J. E. R. Ray, claim £3 16s sd. Defendant was ordered to pay forthwith in default 3 days’ imprisonment. Krahagen and Co. v. J. E. R. Ray, claim £5 Bs. The defendant was ordered to pay forthwith, in default 5 days’ imprisonment. P. S. Sharp claimed from D. Stark £l3 2s. Judgment was given for the amount with court costs 15s 6d and solicitor’s fee £1 Is.
POLICE CASES. Albert Herman Wechsung was charged with having driven a motor car in a negligent manner on April 26 in High Street, Carterton. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £2 with court costs 10s. T. B. Wilton was charged that he did on April 28 drive a motor-car in High Street, Carterton, without due care and attention. After hearing the witnesses, the Magistrate dismissed the case. A. Newland was charged that on May 10 when driving a motor lorry in Lincoln Road, Carterton, and when approaching the Brooklyn Road intersection, he failed to stop or give way to another vehicle approaching the intersection on the right from Brooklyn Road. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £2 with court costs 10s. C. S. Nicholson, Traffic Inspector, proceeded against W. J. Kennedy for having exceeded the speed limit through the borough of Carterton on May’ 6; also that the motor cycle he was riding was not equipped with a silencer. Defendant pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined £2 and costs 10s for having exceeded the speed limit and £1 and costs 10s for not having a muffler on the cycle. He was allowed one month in which to pay the fines.
Mr Sherrock, Inspector of Factories, proceeded against P. L. James on a charge that he engaged a youth as an apprentice and had failed to give notice to the District Registrar of Apprentices. After hearing the evidence defendant was fined £1 and costs.
