COURSING

GRIMWOOD CUP STAKE. GOOD NOMINATIONS RECEIVED. On Saturday the Wairarapa Coursing Club will conduct its second meeting of the season at the Akura Plumpton. The principal event, the Grimwood Cup for maiden dogs, has attracted an excellent entry of 16, the required number. Nominations had been called for 16 dogs, closing on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and the club feels gratified that the stake has filled prior to the closing date. Nominations have been received from Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui, Hastings, Napier and Dannevirke. Two notable dogs from Auckland are Mr Kilgour’s Skittle and Mr Fletcher's Merry Fancy. Both dogs have good records on the tin hare tracks and should prove worthy opponents. Last year’s winner, Mr J. H. Prout, has two nominations in Small Boy and 'China Clipper and he will make a strong bid to win the cup outright. China Clipper has a good run of successes on the tracks and may prove equally as good on the plumpton. Mr F. Riding, of Wanganui, has a strong hand in Mungi Taipo and Mosquito Kid. The former especially is a fast dog and works his quarry well, while the latter dog may prove just as good as his sire, Mosquito Boy, which defeated the pick of the local dogs two seasons ago.

In conjunction with the cup an eight-dog open stake will also be run and early indications point to it also being filled.

With the strong hares available which are being regularly schooled, and are showing excellent form, a thrilling day's sport is assured. The first course will commence at 1.45 p.m. The draw will take place at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Y.M.C.A. and at 7.30 the executive will meet and appoint the officials for Saturday.
