LOSS OF FIVE LIVES IN LANCASHIRE i . — TWO MEN DIE ATTEMPTING TO SAVE OTHERS. RISKS TAKEN BY RESCUERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON. June 6. A fire in a seam eight hundred yards below the surface at the Astley Green Colliery, in Lancashire, caused the loss of five lives, including that of the manager. It is believed that three of the victims were cut off and that the others died in attempting to save them. Rescuers risked gas in retrieving several of those injured. A thousand men in the mine were sent to the surface. The area affected was eventually sealed to avoid further Iqss of life.
