VAPOUR LIGHTS

INSTALLATION IN CARTERTON PROPOSED. BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION. ("Times-Age” Special.) The main street of Carterton is to be illuminated by seven mercury vapour lamps, which are to be erected in High Street in the near future, at a cost of £69 per year above the existing lighting contract. A decision to carry out a scheme provided by the Wairarapa Electric Power Board was made at the monthly meeting of the borough council last night. The plan submitted to the council by the engineer of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, Mr H. B. Keenan, provides for installing seven mercury vapour lamps in High Street from the junction of Belvedere Street to Pembroke Street. The lamps will be of British manufacture. Four lamps will be erected on the Power Board’s poles on the eastern side of the street and three on the west side mounted on the P. and T. poles. In this connection 'it will be necessary to get permission to erect the lamps on the P. and T. poles but no trouble is anticipated in this respect. The total installation costs will be borne by the Wairarapa Electric Power Board. The lamps are to be switched on half an hour after sunset and switched off at 3 a.m. The additional annual charges over and above the borough’s present street lighting contract will amount to £69. All maintenance and replacements are to be carried out by the power board. Councillor E. McKenzie moved that the scheme as submitted be adopted. He considered it most necessary and was of the opinion that the council would not regret its action. The motion was seconded by Councillor L. Clarke. Councillor J. Udy: "It will mean adding more on to the rates.” Councillor McKenzie: "Possibly. But it will only mean adding a small sum to a low-rated town.” Councillor W. A. Hart: "I don’t think it would be necessary to raise the rates.” Councillor McKenzie: "After these lights have been operating for a little while, there will be requests to have them erected in the side streets and further along High Street.” Councillor Clark: “This town is the worst lit one in the Dominion.” The scheme was adopted as stated.
