PEACE PLEDGE UNION
'BRANCH FORMED IN MASTERTON. ARMED FORCE CONDEMNED. A branch of the Peace Pledge Union has been formed in Masterton with Miss Audrey R. Burch, Queen Street, Mastertoh, as secretary. Mr A. Handyside was elected president at the meeting, and a committee was formed to carry out the aims of the branch. . Among other business dealt with, the following resolution was passed: “That this meeting considers that the Prime Minister’s efforts to militarise New Zealand is detrimental to the cause of world peace and is not in the country’s interests. We believe that armed force provokes that which it fears and thus betrays peace. The most effective defence of New Zealand would be provided by the friendship, service • and co-operation that she should offer all countries, pagan or otherwise, of the world; for by such a policy of trust, confidence, understanding and goodwill she would compel the love of other nations. This policy of constructive pacifism would entail great sacrifice, but New Zealanders are prepared to make sacrifices in preparation for war so should be willing to make much greater sacrifices in the cause of peace.”
