MEETING OF FEATHERSTON ’ COUNCIL CONDITION OF TUHITARATA BRIDGE. NEED FOR ADEQUATE LIGHTS ON BICYCLES. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough this morning. Those present were the chairman, Mr A. B. Martin and Councillors R. W. Matthews, G. J. Gillies, L. J. Thompson, J. McLeod, Q. Donald, J. C. Bidwill, D. Cameron, and R. Smith. Mr R. R. Barrett, Carterton, wrote slating that he had orders on hand for several thousand posts and requested permission to carry limited loads on the Woodside Road. Permission was given to use the road under the supervision of the Overseer. “I am instructed to draw attention to the northern end of the Tuhitarata Bridge, which is considered dangerous in its present state,” wrote Mr N. C. C. Shepherd, secretary of the Wairarapa Automobile Association. xhe concrete decking is higher than the road surface and should not be hard to nut in order,”.he wrote. “This matter is already receiving attention,” said the chairman, Mr Martil:. . The Wairarapa branch of the Crippled Children Society wrote asking the council for a grant towards its funds. Councillors decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting. Messrs A. C. Murphy and. W. L. Ingley wrote asking for permission to pur a culvert across Dudding’s Line Road to give them an outlet for a drain which at present had none. Permission to erect the culvert under the supervision of the Overseer was granted. Advice was received from the Transport Department to the effect that regulations would shortly be enforced compelling cyclists to have adequate lights for their machines and requesting countv councils to impress on local residents the urgent necessity of protecting themselves against risk of accidents during the winter months. • Mr J. J. Killop, ranger, reported that during the month 12 head of stock had been impounded and 301 dogs registered. CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED. “During the current year I hope that we will be able to reduce the rates a little,” said Mr A. B. Martin, who was re-elected unopposed chairman of the Featherston County Council at its annual meeting today. Councillor R. Smith was re-elected treasurer. Mr Martin was appointed the representative on the New Zealand Counties' Association.
