BADMINTON

PROVINCIAL TOURNEY CONDITIONS RE-ARRANGED. WAIRARAPA TEAM SELECTED. Advice which has been received by the Wairarapa Badminton Association from the Palmerston North Association in connection with the Inter-Provin-cial tournament at Palmerston North on May 27—28 has necessitated an alteration being made in the arrangements by the Wairarapa selector. The team originally chosen and published in the "Times-Age” was composed of four men and four women. Now that the Inter-Provincial Tournament is to be conducted on former lines, it has been necessary to select six men and six women. The selector has consequently’chosen the following team to play in the tournament:— Messrs P. Hawksworth J. Lulham, J. J. Payton, A. Stabbings Dr H. M. O’Connor and J. Dwane; Mesdames P. Hawksworth, D. Young, Misses D. Allen, B. Payton, L. Hoskmg and N. Rishworth. Messrs L. Wilson and P. Martin (Martinborough) were not available. The New Zealand selectors for the Australian tour will be present, and s brilliant performance is expected from P. Hawksworth, a hot favourite, for the captainship and Mrs Hawksworth. This is probably the last chance the selectors will have of seeing the nominees for the tour in action, before the announcement of the team on June 10. and accordingly tha players nominated will be out to show their best form.

WAIRARAPA v HASTINGS. TONIGHT’S MATCH AT DRILL HALL. Tonight at 6.30 o’clock a badminton team from Hastings.will play a match at the Drill Hall with a team from the Masterton Badminton Club, and an exciting contest is anticipated. The match between Hawksworth (N.Z. champion) and N. C. R. Wilson is expected to be an exciting display, the leading Hawke’s Bay player is expected to extend Hawksworth to the fullest. The matches will be open to the public free of charge, and spectators desiring to witness badminton at its best are invited by the Masterton Club to be present. The following is the Masterton Club’s team: Messrs P. Hawksworth, J. J. Payton, Dr O’Connor, L. Wilson, P. Rishworth, F. D. G. Walker; Mrs D. Young, Misses B. Payton, L. Hosking, N. Rishworth, J.
