Mr J. Jenkin, of Masterton, left for Auckland on Tuesday, having received word that his mother was seriously ill. Mr A. McCarthy, formerly of Invercargill, who was recently appointed judge of the Native Land Court at Rarotonga, left Auckland yesterday by the Matua for the Cook Islands to take up his new appointment.
Members and supporters of the Kiatere Harrier Club gathered in full force at the Epiphany hall last evening, to farewell Mr J. L. Burns, a popular member of the club, who will shortly leave the district. Mr L. A. Askew (president) made eulogistic reference to the services given to the Club by Mr Burns since its inception six years ago, and asked Mr Burns to accept a beautiful wristlet watch, as a parting gift from the club members. Mr J. L. Burns suitably replied. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. A dainty supper was served by a ladies committee. The council of the University of Otago has awarded the Lady King Scholarship to Dr. W. E. Henley, a Rhodes Scholar, who has just returned to New Zealand. This scholarship was established some years ago, and has to do with research in infant feeding. The scholarship, which is for one year and can be extended from year to year, carried a salary of £6OO a year. It was considerably increased in value by a grant from the Government Medical Research Council. Dr. Henley attended the Otago Medical School for three years. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went to Oxford to complete his medical course. He will have his headquaters in Dunedin.
