POTATO EMBARGO
LIKELY TO BE REIMPOSED IN AUSTRALIA MINISTERS CHANGE GROUND. REFERENCES TO IMPORT RESTRICTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A Canberra correspondent says the Federal Cabinet is expected to review this week the arrangements made by the Lyons Government to admit a quota of New Zealand potatoes into Australia. The concession expires on May 20. Pressure within the Cabinet for the admittance of New Zealand potatoes is diminishing and a number of Ministers will support the complete reimposition of the embargo. Factors that contributed to the change in the Cabinet outlook are the failure of the quota to relieve the shortage in Australia, an improvement in local supplies and the fact that since the embargo was partially lifted, the New Zealand Government, instead of reciprocating by improving trading opportunities there* for Australian industries, has imposed drastic restrictions on a wide range of Australianimports.
