CHINESE CLAIM

The “Telegraph’s” Hong Kong correspondent says the Chinese apparently have scored heavily in Honan, claiming the collapse of the Japanese between Tangho and Pinghsih. The Chinese dominate the south bank of the Yangtse-Kiang between Nanking and Kiukiang. HEAVY FIGHTING JAPANESE FOILED IN HUPEH. ENVELOPING MOVEMENT FAILS. (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) CHUNGKING, May 16. The Japanese failed to encircle the Chinese between Sinyangchow and Siangyang, in Northern Hupeh. A Chinese spokesman declared that the Chinese can hold out indefinitely. The Chinese based on Nanyang are exerting pressure on the Japanese right wing at Tangho. Others have crossed the Han River, to threaten the rear of the left wing on the IchangHankow railway. Heavy fighting continues in the Tangho, Suihsien and Tsaoyang sectors. BORDER AFFRAY JAPANESE AND MONGOLIANS. INVADERS DRIVEN BACK. (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) TOKIO, May 16. Japanese and Manchukuan troops attacked troops from Outer Mongolia, which invaded Manchukuo near Nomonham and drove them back with severe casualties. PROTEST RENEWED. THE KULANGSU INVASION. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) SHANGHAI, May 16. Coincidentally with the categorical Japanese rejection of the Municipal Council’s protest, the English, French and American consuls at Kulangsu have protested against the landing of Japanese Bluejackets at Amoy. STAND BY BRITAIN ANTICIPATION OF AMERICAN SUPPORT. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 16. The Government, after considering the landing of Japanese marines at Kulangsu, is informing Japan that she cannot condone any forcible alteration of the Kulangsu Municipal Council. It is expected that the United States will take a similar stand.
