WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT ALKREDTON. COMPETITION RESULTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Alfredton Women's Institute held their meeting recently when there was a fair attendance. Mrs Hull presided and welcomed a new member, Miss Jean Algie. Mrs Spring gave a very interesting report on the council meeting held at Woodville recently. A "Bring and Buy” stall was held and was in charge of Mrs J. Parsonson. The competitions resulted as follows: —Best plain fruit cake, Mrs Weston, 1: Mrs G. Napier. 2; Mrs E. McLean, 3. Shoulder spray. Mrs J. Hartley, 1; Mrs Clarkson, 2; Mrs G. Napier, 3. Best bloom, Mrs A. Edmonds, 1 and 3; Mrs McLean, 2. Peg bag, Mrs E. McLean. 1. The potato growing competition was won by Mrs J. Spring (281b5.), with Mrs E. McLean (181bs.) second. Mrs Rolls proposed a hearty vote of thanks on behalf of the members to Mrs Spring, for her very interesting report, the motion being carried. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames J. Hartley, Clarkson and Low.

KOPUARANGA GATHERING. PRESENTATION TO RETIRING PRESIDENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Institute was held in the Hall on Thursday, Mrs Wright presiding over a fair attendance of members. The - report from the Federation meeting was read by the secretary. On behalf of the members. Mrs Wright asked Mrs S. J. Clarke, the retiring president, to accept a small gift in appreciation of the time she has devoted to the Institute for the past two years. Mrs Clarke suitably replied. The Roll: Call “A Book I'd Recommend” was answered by all present. Mrs C. Jones gave an interesting demonstration on rucked cushion making, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R. A. Miller, and R. Kenny. The winners of the monthly competition were as follow: —Coat hanger. Mrs Wright, 1; Miss M. Wright. 2; Mrs W. J. Cottle, 3. Best bloom:—Mrs Wright, 1; Miss M. Wright, 2; Mrs W. J. Cottle, 3. Best laundered serviette: —Mrs Moon, 1; Miss M._ Wright, 2; Mrs Wright, 3. Nut and date loaf:— Mrs Wright, 1; Miss M. Wright, 2; Mrs E. C. Cottle, 3. Junior:—Miss D. Kenny 1. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
