Identification of about 10 of the New Zealand ratings who returned in the Achilles to Auckland was made difficult for their relatives because on the voyage they had grown beards. Some were brown, other black, and a few golden, but all had been grown strictly to regulation, which does not permit only moustaches, but insists upon full beards or nothing. Permission has to be obtained before the beard is grown.
