A Hokitika butcher lost four good fat bullocks down an. old mine shaft the other day. Six beasts were being driven to the abattoir to be killed, but when they were on the highway near Kanieri they took fright at two cyclists. The bullocks crashed through a nearby fence on to some old goldmine workings. Four of them fell down an old mine shaft about 80 feet deep. Two were killed instantly and two had to be shot. They were a severe loss to their owner, Mr F. J. Andrews.
