HOME & SCHOOL. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the South Featherston Home and School Association was held in the South Featherston Hall on Thursday and was presided over by Mrs Arch. Clark. The attendance was not as large as usual, due possibly to the school holidays. Business of a routine nature was transacted. The winner of the best programme for the year was Mrs A. Gain with Mrs P. Wilton second and Mrs J. Hawke third. Mesdames A. Gain, P. Gain and Dean Burt entertained those present at afternoon tea.
QUEEN CARNIVAL. SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. A highly successful shop day in aid of the “Blue” Queen, Miss Anne Fellingham, was held in the Town Hall, Featherston, yesterday. The stall-hold-ers were as follows: — Produce: Mesdames J. B. McKenna, D. M. Jeffrey and Miss Jean Tutbury.Cakes: Mesdames G. S. Sharp, V. Bergh, H. Tutbury and Miss Zena Tutbury. Sweets: Misses Greta McTaggart, Betty Smith and Hazel Bergh. Jumble: Misses Jean Brash and Lois Ritchie. Meat: Mr Bert. Hodder. Afternoon tea: Mesdames J. G. McKenzie and G. Harkness. The stall-holders report excellent business. Several competitions were drawn, the results being as under:—Dinner, Mrs G. S. Sharp (beans in bottle, guessed 444, correct number 443); cake, ]Vlrs C. Merwood; pair dressed fowls, E. J. Morgan; box of tea, Mrs R. T. Saunders (string in bottle Byds. 29Jin., nearest 8 7-Byds.). During' the evening competitions went with a swing and the Junior Entertainers under the tuition of . Mrs Lowell gave several enjoyable items and songs, the singing being of a particularly high standard. Mrs G. Harkness was pianiste. The effort was considered highly successful and should help to place the “Blue” Queen in a strong position. Removal of Trees. A number of trees behind the local Public Library have recently been removed in order to allow the native trees, which were planted by the late Mr Wm. Benton, to become firmly established. The removal of the trees will also benefit the croquet green on the other side. Road Improvements. Excellent progress has been made by the Featherston County Council with the Western Lake Road in preparation for sealing. It is anticipated that the road will be sealed up to the Cross Creek junction before winter sets in. The surface of Murphy’s line has been considerably improved as, the result of the work of the country grader. This road is becoming increasingly more popular owing to it giving access to the Wairarapa Lake Domain. Personal Items. Miss Gladys Ayre, Wadestown, Wellington, is spending the weekend with her parents, Mr and Mrs H. W. Ayre, Hayward Street. / Mrs E. M. Wakcly, who has been on a short visit to Wellington, has returned to her home. Mr F. Burt, Junr., who has been undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Wellington, has returned to his home at South Featherston very much benefited in health. Mr and Mrs J. Fletcher, of Wellington, are spending the weekend as the guest of Miss Bessie Donald. Miss Nan Walden, of Hawke’s Bay, is the guest of Misses Jean and Flora Donald. Fortnightly Euchre. The fortnightly euchre tournament was held in the South Featherston Hall on Thursday night,- the attendance beirig not up to average, owing, no doubt, to the many counter attractions. The results' were as follows:—Ladies: Mrs I. Cross, 1; Mrs M. Baker, 2. Men: Ned. Perry, 1; P. A. Wilton, 2. It was a coincidence that all these . players had the same number of points and had to cut for the prizes.
