BOROUGH COUNCIL

MEETING AT MARTINBOROUGH. REDUCTION IN RATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill), Councillors M. N. Hardie (treasurer), W. F. Gundrie, C. R. Holmes, W. H. Corfield, G. P. Cotter, D. J. Green, A. T. Hamilton and P. R. Plummer. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Mulvaney. Mi’ J. W. Card wrote on behalf of several applicants for an urban farms list, enclosing conditions accepted to his clients. After discussion it was decided to adhere to the agreement already made, and that a letter be sent to Mr Card to that effect. A lettei’ was received from the Valuation Department regarding the valuation of the Borough. It was decided that no valuation was required at present as the rates were to be reduced this year. The Sanitary Inspector wrote enclosing a report concerning the health of the people of the borough for the past year, which was considered satisfactory. Councillor Corfield requesting leave of absence for five ,nonths. The request was granted. The Mayor and Councillors "wished Councillor Corfield an enjoyable trip. The revenue received since the lasi meeting totalled £sb 14s Id. Accounts amounting to £772 5s Id were passed for payment. It was reported that Mr C. Johns had been appointed foreman in place of Mi’ Wadsworth. General work had been carried out. It was reported that the fire plugs needed attention and the foreman was instructed to attend to the same in wet weather. The Mayor spoke of the long and faithful service rendered to the borough by the retiring overseer, Mr Wadsworth, with wnich Councillors concurred. It was resolved that Mr Wadsworth be granted a month's holiday on full pay. The ranger reported that the roads had been free of wandering stock during the month and that 120 dogs had been registered to date. The balance sheet as presented was passed for audit. The estimates as submitted were approved. Councillor Gundrie congratulated the council on the past year’s operations and said that in the present circumstances the council were to be commended on the drastic cut made 1 in the rates in the interest of all, and the council's determination to keep within the estimates. He complimented the Mayox- on the progress made during the first year of his mayoralty, and on his rulings at the council table, which were conductive to the harmony of meetings. It was resolved that the Government be written to requesting that the promise to erect houses in the botough be fulfilled. It was decided that tenders for metal be called. '
