Nearly 22,000 eels have been captured in Southland rivers this season, mainly as a result of the Acclimatisation Society's work in ridding the streams of these menaces to trout. A return presented to the meeting of the Council of the Society showed the following totals of eels captured in the various districts: Brydone 600, Charlton 522, Mandeville 120, Balfour 30, Otama 100, Centre Bush 400, Winton 2349, Gorge Road 2218, Makarewa 380, Menzies Ferry 850, Otaitai Bush 2300, Thornbury 1771, Lochiel 1070, Tuatapere 31, Oporo 200, Invercargill 20, Lillburn 25, Parawa 50, Otapiri, Hedgehope and Makarewa 8195, Gorge Road apd Murihiku 47, other districts 651; total, 21,929.
