Messrs J. J. Ewington and J. D. Watt left this morning for a combined business and pleasure tour of the North Island.
Dr Henry Thomas Joynt Thacker, a former member of Parliament and mayor of ' Christchurch, aged 69, died in Christchurch yesterday, states ■ a Press Association message. Messrs H. Frost, Auckland, and H. Harris, Dunedin, were elected life members of the New iZealand Rugby Union at the annual meeting of delegates in Wellington. At the management committee meeting of the Wairarapa Badminton Association last night, Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth were unanimously nominated to represent New Zealand in the proposed toui- of Australia. The death occurred suddenly on Wednesday of one of the best known citizens in Dunedin, Mr John-Moloney, who for the last half century occupied a prominent position in business circles in, the city. Mr Moloney, who celebrated his eightieth birthday last March, had an outstanding business record, in that he had been connected for the whole of his business life with 'one firm and had worked in the same building for more than 61 years. The Director of the Dairy Produce Export Division of the Primary Products Marketing Department, Mr G. A. Duncan, will leave Wellington for London on business of the department by the Rangitane on Saturday. “Mr Duncan,” said the acting-Minister of Marketing, Mr Lee Martin, last night, “will have the opportunity of viewing at first hand the distribution of New Zealand dairy produce in the United Kingdom, and the operation of the marketing policy inaugurated by the Government in 1936. In the event of discussions, on the renewal of the overseas freight contract being continued in London Mr Duncan will be able to participate.” At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday officebearers were elected as follows: —Patron, His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, Viscount Galway; president, Mr M. McKenzie (Marlborough; vice-presi-dents, Messrs L. V. Carmine (King Country) and W.' CradaocK (Buller); council, Messrs G. A. Maddison (Hawke’s Bay), A. St. C. Belcher (Waikato), Dr. G. J. Adams (Wanganui), Messrs A. A. Adams (West Coast), D. M. Spedding (Otago), and L. R. Lopdell (Southland); executive, Messrs S. S. Dean, A. McDonald, ’J. H. Parker, J. Prendeville, A. C. Kitto, and Colonel T. J. King; appeal council, Sir J. S. Hutchison, Messrs F. H. Campbell and H. F. Sincock.
The funeral of the late Mr J. T. Dagg, which took place yesterday afternoon was largely attended by settlers from all parts of the district. The Rev John Davie conducted a service at Knox Church, where he made reference to the excellent work Mr Dagg had done during the war for the soldiers, while he was residing at Pigeon Bush and also to the splendid services he had rendered to the church as a member of Knox session. Mr Dagg, said Mr Davie, was a man of outstanding character and his example could well be followed by the present generation. Mr Davie also officiated at the graveside. Wreaths were sent by the minister and session of Knox Church, Masterton; minister, session and members of Presbyterian Church, Eketahuna; Solway College Board of Governors, the Eketahuna Gentlemen’s Club and many others. Messrs R. C. F. Dagg, J. G. Dagg and N. W. Dagg /nephews) and H. M. A. Major, R. Bridge and O. Walton acted as pall-bearers.
