RURAL TELEPHONES
« CONNECTION WITH LOCAL POST OFFICE DESIRED. DECISION OF TINUI DISTRICT SUBSCRIBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Further consideration was given by Tinui district settlers, at a meeting held last night and presided over by Mr James Andrew, to the question of <* the rural telephone service, following on the Government’s determination to impose increased rentals and its refusal to continue the concessions granted in 1933. Although it was recognised as a retrograde step, the meeting decided to set up two subcommittees, one for the Tinui area and the other for the Whareamg area, to go into the matter of securing telephone connections with the Tinui and Whareama post offices respectively. The view was expressed that this was the only alternative open, as those present were not prepared to pay the increased charges. It was pointed out that over 16 miles of the existing lines belonged to the settlers. The sub-committees appointed were: Whareama, Messrs P. Andrew, R. Foreman and A. S. Buckley; Tinui, Messrs F. Bartholomew, C. Beiliss, A. Owen, D. Carman and L. Cameron. A committee is meeting the Postmaster at Masterton to further discuss the proposal.
