BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION COMPETITION

RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S PLAY. A. AND B. GRADE MATCHES. Results of A. and B. grade matches played on Saturday in the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s competitions are as follow: — A grade:—lona beat College A, 10/5; Wairarapa High School Old Girls, beat Collegians, 17/9; Stars beat College B, 21/3.

B grade—Belvedere beat College C, 13/8; lona beat Carterton, 21/11; Stars beat Greytown, 12/10. In the match lona v College A the game was fast with good passing and combination in the College team, often bringing the ball to their forwards who, though they combined well failed repeatedly to culminate with an accurate throw at the goal. lona centres and defence played well, but their forwards were not up to their usual standard of play, lacking confidence in shooting. Play in Collegians v Wairarapa High School Old Girls game was very scrappy with far too much personal contact on both sides, especially in the •centre third. Collegians would do better if there were more team play and less individual effort. J. Gemmell would do well to watch her erratic passing, which is often far too low. In both teams the passing was too long •and too high. During the first half of the game the Old Girls’ forwards played well, but deteriorated as the game progressed. Stars had an easy win over College B. but the losers put up a splendid fight against them. N. Wilson played a good game in College defence while their centres had flashes of good passing and combination. The Stars defence need to watch their long passes into the centre third, especially when it is not necessary. M. Rutherford played a sound game in Stars’ centre, while O. Lasagnt did good work in the goal third. Throughout the game Stars’ combination was good. The Belvedere v College C match was an interesting game to watch, and was very closely contested, both-teams being most keen. The College team have two good defence players in B. Hare and B. Gaskin, and two good centres in P. Cody and P. Olliver. Their forwards had quite a good combination, but rather lacked confidence in shooting. D. Hanston played a good forward game. Belvedere forwards although rather lacking in combination make up for it in-accurate shooting. D Sewell played well in their defence and E. Garret in the centre. The lona and Carterton game, too, was rather scrappy. lona were more sure of their passings and more accurate in their shooting. Carterton need to concentrate on the centre throw off to make sure their own side receives the throw, while their defence need to be more alert, for a team is only as strong as its weakest section. In Stars v Grey town match the Stars forwards combined well, while M. Emerson played a good defence game. L. Gray played well in Greytown defence.

All teams would improve their game by concentrating on using every member of the team instead of only a few.
