OUR DEFENCE NEEDS
NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO LOOK TO NAVY SIR A. RUSSELL’S SURVEY. NEED OF TRAINED LAND FORCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, April 26. “The Northland, in the event of war in the Pacific, would be one of the most vulnerable and dangerously situated parts of New Zealand if an invader decided to secure a foothold.” said General Sir Andrew Russell last night, when addressing a public meeting which endorsed the objects of the Defence League. “It is no longer possible to look to the Navy for coastal protection,” Sir Andrew stated. “The foundations of an efficient air force are being built, but it will be necessarily small compared with potentive aggression forces. New Zealand must rely on trained land troops to resist invasion. The experience of Turkey on Gallipoli showed what such troops could do.”
