FOOTBALL CARNIVAL

GATHERING AT THE PARK. KEEN CONTESTS ON SATURDAY. Although the weather conditions affected the attendance, the football carnival at the Park Oval on Saturday was most successful and a satisfactory sum was raised towards the cost of installing electric lights at Memorial Park. The three Masterton clubs, Red Star, Old Boys and Masterton, combined to present an attractive programme of events.

Past and present players paraded from Memorial Park to the Park Oval, via Queen Street, marching to the music of the Wairarapa College Pipe Band and the Masterton Municipal Band. At the Park, the track was heavy for a programme of running and field events. Pat Boot and W. A. C. Pullar ran in a three-mile practice race but neither extended himself, both finishing well back. R. Wyeth won narrowly from G. Sutherland. Old Boys were the most successful club, their wins including the inter-club relay. Several side-shows did a brisk trade until late in the afternoon, and takings exceeded, expectations. Results of the' afternoon’s events and competitions were as follow’s: Senior 100yds: Meurk (Old Boys), 1; Henson (Gladstone), 2.
