FEATHERSTON

RACING CLUB STEWARDS. SATISFACTORY EASTER MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club there were present Messrs J. W. Card (chairman), J. F. Thompson, G. D. Martin, C. J. Nix, W. H. Booth, R. N. Barton and Roy Donald, H. Lawson (treasurer), and N. C. C. Shepherd (secretary). The secretary submitted .the balance sheet for the Easter meeting, which was considered very satisfactory. Receipts since last meeting totalled £9380 17s 2d, and on the 15th the finance committee had met and passed accounts totalling £3348 14s Bd, stakes £3225, and also wages and accounts incidental to the meeting. Further accounts amounting to £54 6s 9d were submitted and passed for payment. It was resolved to take £lOOO in Government inscribed stock.

The report of Mr George Ebbett, deputy stipendiary steward, stated inter alia that all the buildings, fences and appointments on the course were in good order and well maintained. The track had been watered and was also good. The organisation and management at the meeting were well above the average, and the officials, including the totalisator staff, were very capable, and he could find no fault with any of them. The fields were’not large, and whilst three or four starts appeared to be somewhat ragged, it was not the starter’s fault, as many of the jockey’s were apprentices and not very good at getting away. The judging was also satisfactory, there being no errors, and consequently no subsequent alterations, in the placings. The secretary of the N.Z. Racing Conference advised that the annual meeting of the conference would be held in Wellington commencing Friday, July 7. Permission to use the course on April 22 and 23 was granted to the N.Z. Corps of Signallers. It was decided to erect a platform behind the loud speaker stand in the centre of the course for the use of the course stewards. The chairman of the course committee, Mr C. J. Nix, recommended that the paths behind the main stands and the area under the trees be tar-sealed. It was resolved to request an engineer to meet the course committee and go into the matter. The building committee was authorised to meet and go into the question of new buildings deemed necessary, and report to the stewards at next monthly meeting. Sale of Poppies. --' The sale of poppies in the Featherston, Waiorongomai and Tauherenikau districts realised £2O. The District High School girls canvassed Featherston.
