Bands of orphaned and hungry children were often met with in Spain, said Mr H. R. Bryan, when recounting in Christchurch his experiences with the International Brigade. On one occasion, he said, a band of children, who had probably lost their fathers at the front and mothers in a recent air raid, begged for bread. One member of his company threw them a crust. In the fight that followed several children were hurt. Mr Bryan remarked that the British Government had been unwilling to give foodships an escort.
