MAN FOUND DEAD

IN HOSPITAL GROUNDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A shocking tragedy was discovered near the Pahiatua Public Hospital on Tuesday night, when a nurse found the body of an elderly man; Mr Walter Douglas Burgess, farmer, of Man gamaire, lying near his car in the grounds of the Hospital. Mr Burgess had apparently shot himself in the mouth with a .22 rifle, and death must have been instantaneous. For the past fortnight, Mr Burgess had been very ill with influenza, and had complained constantly of pains in the head. On Tuesday evening, between 7 and 8 o’clock, he was sitting with his wife listening-to the wireless, when he suddenly complained of intense pain in the head, rushed out and got into his car, and was seen by Mrs Burgess to drive off in the direction of Pahiatua. He apparently drove his car into the hospital grounds, got out, and shot himself with the rifle. The body was discovered at about 9.40 p.m. by one of the nurses, and the police were immediately informed.
