HOSPITAL PAYMENTS
VALUE TO MASTERTON FIRMS STRESSED. BIG SALARY AND WAGES TOTAL. The value of the Wairarapa Hospital Board to business firms and trading concerns in Masterton was stressed by the Managing-Secretary, Mr Norman Lee, at yesterday’s meeting of the board. Mr Lee. said that last year general payments by the board in Masterton totalled £13,534 18s 2d and to Government departments £BB2 3s 2d, making a total of £14,417 Is 4d Salaries and wages paid to members of the staff in Masterton amounted to £16,773 10s 6d and payments to the Wairarapa Electric Power Board totalled £2205 16s 6d, making a grand total of £33,396 8s 4d. Some criticism has been directed at the board for accepting an order from a Wellington wholesale firm instead of dealing locally. The wholesale firm’s price, however, was £935, and that of the local one £1029, which meant that a saving of £94 was effected. In return the local bodies paid the following levies: Masterton Borough Council, £3196 12s; Masterton County Council, £5094 10s; Castlepoint County Council, £9607 18s.
