RUMOUR DENIED

STATEMENT AT HOSPITAL t BOARD. POSITION OF SUSTENANCE MEN. “It has been freely stated that it is an abominable practice for the Hospital Board to dock £1 a week off the payments of sustenance men while they are in hospital,” declared Mrs S. Fletcher at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. She was fully aware that the statement Was not true, but she wised to have it made perfectly clear that it was the Government and not the board which took the £1 a week. The board actually received nothing. The Managing-Secretary, Mr Norman Lee, said that the Social Security Department docked £1 a week off the sustenance of the men while they were in hospital, and paid the difference to their wives. The board received nothing.
