MARTINBOROUGH

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large family gathering at the Knoll homestead to celebrate with a dinner the 21st birthday of Mi Ralph Crowther Jones, the third son of Mr Henry Jones and the late Mrs Jones, of Masterton, and who is on the staff of the Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch. The large dining room was decorated with oak foliage. Silver baskets of flowers in all colours, with balloons and streamers, gave the room a festive appearance. A large palm and tiny crystal vases of pansies and maiden hair ferns, adorned the centre of a well laden table, taking up the whole length of the room. The birthday cake, on which were 21 candles, was made by Mrs Jones (step-moth-er), and was iced and decorated by a friend of the family, Miss Eva Rane, who is a Martinborough District High School girl. A miniature confectionery aeroplane suspended above the cake was presented by a cousin, Mr Lourie Andricksen, of Levin. Three Cupids stood in the centre of the cake holding a small gold key, which was presented to Mr Ralph Jones with musical honours by his father. Later three motor cars transported many members of the party to the Ruamahanga River where swimming was much enjoyed. At 4 p.m. a dainty afternoon tea was served in the drawing room and much appreciated musical items given. At 7 p.m. musical items filled in the fest of the evening. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Save the King.” Personal. Mr Richard Connell has 'returned to Martinborough after a holiday spent with friends in Wanganui.
