SALE OF POPPIES

ORGANISATION IN MASTERTON. LADIES’ COMMITTEE FORMED. At the request of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association the May 4 oress of Masterton (Mrs T. Jordan) has kindly undertaken the organisation of a ladies’ committee to conduct the sale of poppies on Friday April 21, when the streets will be thoroughly combed by the poppy sellers. The poppy is firmly established as the National Emblem pf Remembrance of New Zealand soldiers who fell in the Great War of 1914-1918, and the proceeds derived from the sales are retained by the R.S.A. for relief of ex-service men and their dependents during the winter months when living is dearer and work is not so'plentiful. Last year the borough responded with a sum of £199 16s 4d and it is anticipated that this year’s sales will be larger. Branches of the Association in Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough are also arranging for the sales in their centres prior to Anzac Day, and the Wairarapa effort of £329 last year is likely to be exceeded. The poppies are sold at a minimumprice of Is each, and should be kept and worn on Anzac Day (25th April). The Association appeals to the public to support Mrs Jordan in her campaign for funds to help the ex-service men. Valley residents are also asked to respond to the appeal in their various centres.
