NATIONAL WELFARE

WOMEN’S LEAGUE. MEETING IN MASTERTON. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday afternoon in the Midland Hotel. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames H. E. Pither, A. W. McKenzie, R. G. Drummond, G. G. Tolhurst, S. J. Munn, G. McCracken, S. L. P. Free, H. P. Harrison, G. H. Collie, L. Hunter, R. Whyborn, E. J. Coleman, F. Garland, A. E. Kilgour and Miss Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, Latimer, Glen, Bull, S. Fletcher, J. Caselberg, H. Brisco, F. Daniell, and Miss Bellis. The resignation of Mrs Michael was received and accepted with regret. Mrs Tolhurst reported on two visits paid to the Masterton Hospital during March, tea to the T.B. Ward and flowers and literature to all other wards being distributed. Donations of periodicals and other reading matter will be appreciated as the winter months are approaching and long nights can be lightened by reading. Gifts of books, etc., can be left at Mr R. Page’s shop, Queen Street. The vistprs for April are Mesdames Drummond, Hunter and Tolhurst. A number of silk mats were displayed which were made by young inmates of the hospital and orders asked for. Mrs Munn suggested that May 18 would be a good date to visit the Buchanan Home if suitable to th§. matron. Cars, visitors and performers are to be left to Mrs Munn to arrange. Mrs A. W. McKenzie reported on two cases assisted, clothing and groceries being given in both instances. It was decided oh the motion of Mrs Tolhurst seconded by Miss Kummer that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mrs Hill who had greatly assisted in a welfare case. Mrs Pither reported that a great many orders had been sent through during the month to the Blind Institute. Tickets for the yearly art union held by the Blind Institute were distributed to members to sell. Mrs Pither, who is the delegate of the League to the Locality Committee for the Pan-Pacific Conference to be held at the Centennial Exhibition in January, 1940, spoke on lecturing study groups, etc., arid the help it would be to the younger generation by joining such groups. Miss Kummer thanked Mrs Pither for her interesting address. As the annual meeting will be held on May 5, nomination for president, secretary, treasurer and vice-presi-dents must be in the hands of the secretary by April 21. .Mesdames Graham, Astridge, Glen arid “Anoh.” were thanked for various gilts during March.
