COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL GOOD FINANCIAL POSITION DISCLOSED. BALANCE SHEET CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough today. The chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presided and others present were Councillors R. W. Matthews, G. J. Gillies. L. J. Thompson, J. McLeod. Q. Donald. J. C. Bidwill. D. Cameron and R. Smith. The Moroa Water-race Committee wrote asking if the council was agreeable to the committee selling the Kaiwaiwai cottage property. Consideration of the matter was deferred until the next meeting. It was decided to advise a firm of contractors that the council was not prepared to sell nts small grader. A letter was received from a ratepayer refusing to agree to any extra rates for extending the water supply, which, he said, was only needed for about three months of the year. The ratepayer is to bo informed that the council intends to adhere to its previous decision. The Masterton County Council wrote stating that the Featherston Council’s allocation of heavy traffic fees for the quarter ended February 28 amounted to £307 5s 7d, as compared with £331 17s 4d for the corresponding quarter of last year. Mr J. R. McNamara, Morison’s Bush, wrote asking the council to have its title to the Kaitara Pit put in order and a locked gate erected at the entrance as people were going in and taking metal in addition to cutting up his property. The engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood, was instructed to have a survey made preparatory to fencing being erected. The ranger reported having dealt with 16 head of stock and registered 303 dogs during the month. Accounts amounting to £4443 15s 3d were passed. General satisfaction was expressed with the state of the balance-sheet for the current year. The balance-sheet was adopted, subject to audit. The year started with a credit balance of £5061 and closed with a credit of £5097. Subject to the legal procedure being in order, it was decided to accept the offer of a firm to carry out work at the headworks of the FeatherstonLongwood water-race at a cost of £1350. The usual resolution was passed closing certain roads in the county to heavy traffic during the winter months.
