WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT CARTERTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall yesterday, Mrs H. Knutson presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Aspiration. Members are reminded of the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Federation to be held at Masterton on Wednesday, April 19, when it is hoped that there will be a good attendance of members from this Institute. Arrangements for the annual sale of poppies on Friday, April 21, on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association were finalised. The bronze bowls for flowers have been presented to the Institute by members of the Garden Circle. This gift was suitably acknowledged by the President. Songs were rendered by Mrs V. L. Robinson and Mrs M. Worsfold, and these items were enjoyed by all present. An amusing competition, naming the symbols on a penny, was won by Mrs B. Trapp. Mrs Knutson, in a happy speech, referred to the services rendered to the Institute by Miss Wolters during her four years as President, and asked Mrs Trapp to accept on her behalf (owing tc Miss Wolters’ unavoidable absence), a charming cocktail set. At the same time Mrs Knutson referred to the able manner in which Mrs Pink had carried out the duties of honorary secretary and treasurer during her term of office, and presented her with a handsome hanging mirror as a token of appreciation from the members. The competitions for May are: (a) three plain scones and (b) a jar of apple jelly. The time of the commencement ot meetings in future was altered to 2.15 p.m. Th meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
