WEEKEND MATCHES. VISIT FROM WELLINGTON. Two Wellington baseball teams visited the Wairarapa during,the weekend and played matches with local representatives at the Carterton Showgrounds. A fully representative Wairarapa team tried conclusions with Vale’s, one of the leading combinations in the sec; ond league of the Wellington competitions. Vale’s won by 14 runs to 2, being superior to Wairarapa in every department of the game. The local fielders, generally sound, failed badly, particularly the basemen, while there was little sense of anticipation shown by the out-fielders. Wairarapa batting is always weak and for first four innings no runner got further than first base. Vale’s team is a good combination and many of the visitors gave splendid advice to the local players.

A second game arranged by Reliance Tyres was against Capstan, a third league Wellington team. The local team, captained by F. Bodie, was a composite one formed on the ground from among the players present and showed better form than in the first game. Wairarapa won by 13 runs to 5, the batting improving against the weaker pitching of the Capstan team. The fielding, too, was better and Bodie played an excellent game at first base, well, supported by the other in-field players. ___________
