THE TOMATO
SHOW CLASSIFICATION. ROYAL SOCIETY’S DECISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. The tomato may be classed for show purposes either as a fruit or a vegetable. This is stated in the Royal Horticultural Society’s rules for judging. Doubt about the classification of the tomato for show purposes was indicated by a recent decision of the corrimittee of the Matamata A. and P. Association, Auckland, to obtain a ruling from the Royal Horticultural Society. The society's rules for the direction of judges say that tomatoes may be classed as a fruit or vegetable and show schedules should indicate in which classification they are to be shown. A< fruit, tomatoes should be small and even, thoroughly ripe, and judged on flavour. As .vegetables they should be of medium size, with clear skins, speckless and unbroken, solid and ripe.
