ESPERANTO

MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club was held last evening in the club room, Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presiding over a good attendance. The secretary, Mr W. H. King, presented a report regarding the social function held at Wellington last Saturday evening under the auspices of the combined clubs in the Wellington district. Approximately 200 Esperantists attended and the programme included interesting plays composed and presented by members of the Hutt Valley and the Miramar clubs, also songs rendered by the Wellington Esperanto Club’s choir, comprising about 20 voices. The formation of a new club at Karori was announced. Correspondence in Esperanto received during the week included letters from Cuba and Austria, a journal from France and a 40-page booklet entirely in Esperanto containing the programmes for March from the Italian radio station 2RO.

It was reported that at a special meeting held recently at the University College. London, members of the teaching profession in England had formed the Teachers’ Esperanto Association, of which the chief aim is the introduction of the international language into the schools of Great Britain where the teaching of Esperanto is on the increase. In addition, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film corporation is at present engaged in making a picture featuring Clark Gable, in which certain parts are spoken in Esperanto. The elementary and advanced study circles continued operations under the guidance of Mr Dewar and Mr King, respectively, substantial progress being reported at the conclusion of the lessons.

The final item consisted of a short talk in Esperanto by Miss M. J. Ross, M.A., her subject being “Impressions of the 9th New Zealand Esperanto Congress.”
