TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

ANNUAL MEETING A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. At the third annual meeting of the Masterton Townswomen’s Guild, held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, there was _ a large attendance of members and visitors. ~, , Mrs W. H. Judd presided and thanked the retiring committee for their help and united efforts in the interests of the Guild. During the afternoon, potatoes grown for the Guild were weighed and judged, Mrs A. L. Bennett again winning the prize with 26 £ lbs. from 3 seed potatoes. Mrs Miller Hope, L.R.S.M., played two pianoforte solos, and Mrs Speight sang “Recompense” and “I Love a Little Cottage,” these items all being greatly appreciated. Community singing, with Mrs Coleman at the piano, was enjoyed by all present. A competition was won by Mrs Pearse. Annua! Report The annual report was presented by the retiring secretary, Mrs E. J. Burke, and stated: —The Guild’s third year has been a most successful one. Membership has steadily increased, there being 39 new members during the year, the financial membership now 'being 129, with the anticipation of many more new members in the ensuing year. The Guild is exceedingly grateful to the speakers and demonstrators, also to those who contributed items at the monthly general meeting. The speakers were: —Mrs J. A. Lee, “Famous Women of Today”; Mr A. Clemas, F.1.C.5., “Antiques”; Mr H. R. Keltie, D.C., “Mind, 'the Master”; Nurse M. Hodges, “The Maoris.” Demonstrators were: —Miss Maddever, “Arts and Crafts”; Mrs P. Borthwick, “Floral Work”; Mrs C. R. Boys, “Basket Work.” Addresses and demonstrations were presented at alternate meetings. Likewise at alternate meetings roll calls, or 10 minute travel talks were presented. Travel talks were as follows: —Mrs J. Robertson, “Rotorua”; Mrs A. Stubbings, “Cape Kidnappers”; Mrs Miller Hope, L.R.S.M., “Buller Gorge.” The exhibition table (convener, Mrs H. Thompson) was of special interest at monthly meetings. Five Circles have been run very successfully in connection with the Guild: —Gardening (Mrs E. Shortland); drama (Miss I. Grant); singing (Miss D. O’Donnell); bridge (Mrs Coleman); Arts and Crafts (Mrs P. Ramsay). The leader of each Circle well merited the sincere appreciation of the Guild for their untiring efforts. The Gardening Circle organised a most successful flower show in November, and the Guild extends thanks to Mr J. Robertson, M.P., for performing the opening ceremony. The annual social evening, held in August, was a great success in every way. The president (Mrs Judd) and secretary (Mrs Burke) were sent as delegates- to the annual T.G. Council meeting in Wellington. Special thanks are given to the auditor, Mrs E. Engstrom; the pianiste, Mrs A. L. Bennett; Guild Registrar, Mrs J. O. Thomson; “Townswoman” distributor and reporter, Mrs A. Stubbings; Ode distributor, Mrs Andrews, and to all members who made sprays and bouquets for various functions, all afternoon tea hostesses, and helpers, and to the Press. The annual report was adopted, the retiring secretary, Mrs E .J. Burke, being accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her efforts on behalf of the Guild. Sound Financial Position. The treasurer, Mrs A. L. Bennett, then presented the annual balance sheet, which showed the finances of the Guild to be on a very sound basis. Election of Officers. The election of the committee, by ballot, was an important feature of the meeting. The president, Mrs W. H. Judd, was re-elected unopposed, a unanimous vote of appreciation being carried. The result of the election was as follows: —Hon. secretary, Mrs A. L. Bennett; hon. treasurer, Mrs D. E. Lyttle; committee, Mesdames D .F. Andrews, E. J. Burke, P. Dixon, J. L. Hair, G. W. Milne, J. Robertson, A. Stubbings, W. Snowsill and J. Walker. Afternoon tea was enjoyed while the balloting was taking place. The meeting concluded with the singing of the Guild Ode.
