WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. ANNUAL MEETING AT KAHUTARA (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Kahutara Branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday when there was a good attendance, including , visitors from the Parkvale branch. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mrs McKenna (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdam.es Harvey and Ackman; secretary, Miss Joan Hood; treasurer, Mrs. Duffy; committee, Mesdames Rogers, Hood, Harland, Pope, Siemonek, A. Cole, D. Fenwick, D. Wilson, Humphries, R. Welsh. Mesdames Wilson and Welsh tied for the most entries for the year; Mrs Welsh winning the draw. Competitions were won as follow: — Best bloom for the year, Mrs R. Welsh; points prize (junior) and most entries, Miss L. Hood;j points prize (junior) best bloom, Mrs T. Udy. Mrs Adams, Parkvale, after presenting the prizes, was presented with a shoulder spray. The tea hostesses were Mesdames Acjcman, G. and A. Cole and D. Fenwick. Personal. i Miss Jean Tutbury won the cup in the decorating class at the Greytown horticultural show. Mr H. Newman, who has been visiting Pihautea, has returned to Karori. SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. SUCCESSFUL EUCHRE TOURNAMENT.
The Home and School Association’s euchre tournament which was held on Tuesday night, was well attended, there being 14 tables. The winners were: Ladies: Mrs W. Benton 1, Miss M. Nix 2; consolation Mrs A. Tait. Men: Mrs F. O’Neale 1, Mr A. McLeod 2; consolation. Mrs J. Buck. RED CROSS SOCIETY. SUB-BRANCH FORMED. A meeting was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall for the purpose of establishing a branch of the Red Cross Society. Miss Card was voted to the chair. Apologies were received from Mesdames Q. Donald, D. H. S. Riddiford, J. T. Holland, S. Burt and C. Rea and Mr P. Clark.
Miss Card introduced Mr I. P. Bridger, Director-General of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, who was present to explain the aims of the Society. Mr Bridger said he had been all through the Wairarapa and formed branches in. all the other towns, and hoped to form one in Featherston. Mr Bridger said the aim of the society was to give relief to suffering humanity in epidemic, disaster or war, and instanced several happenings throughout the world where service had been rendered. Inaugurated by Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War of 1854 the work was carried on by a Gevenese named Harry Dunant and in 1919 the League of Red Cross Societies was founded. Today there are 63 national societies. Mr Bridger explained that it was known as the British Red Cross Society until 1932 and in the last seven years had been carried on as the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Incorporated.
At the conclusion of the address, Mrs Carlyon moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Bridger, this being carried by acclamation.
On the motion of Mrs Carlyon it was decided that a sub-branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society be formed in Featherston.
The following office bearers were appointed: —Patron, Mrs D. H. Riddiford; president, Mrs Q. Donald; vice-chair-woman, Mrs H. Bloxam; vice-presi-dents, Miss Card, Mrs Carlyon and Mrs R. W. Matthews; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. G. McKenzie; nursing committee, Mesdames Sharp, Shepherd, Barker, Noble and H. Clark, subject to their approval. All those present were elected a general committee with power to add. Afternoon tea was then served.
